When tasked with designing a food hall, we immediately drew inspiration from Malaysia’s vibrant pasar malam (night markets) — lively, informal spaces rich with sensory experiences. Among their most striking visual features are the rows of yellow canopies that line the streets, creating a festive and inviting atmosphere.
Cultural Resonance
The use of yellow canopies in this design pays direct homage to the aesthetic and spirit of the pasar malam. Rather than a singular roof, a series of smaller yellow canopies come together to form a collective shelter — echoing the modularity and spontaneity of traditional night market stalls. This gesture anchors the market in a distinctly local cultural memory.
Light and Atmosphere
Strategically spaced gaps between the canopies allow natural light to filter through during the day, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. This reduces reliance on artificial lighting while enriching the sensory experience beneath the canopy.
Spatial Reinterpretation
The canopies are reimagined in an inverted configuration — an architectural move that invites visitors to view the familiar in a new way. This inversion transforms the roofscape into a sculptural ceiling, offering a fresh spatial perspective and a sense of unexpected delight.
Emotional and Psychological Impact
Yellow, a color strongly associated with warmth, energy, and joy, plays a key role in shaping the market’s atmosphere. Beyond its cultural significance, it stimulates appetite, uplifts mood, and makes the environment feel more engaging and festive — all of which contribute to a more memorable and enjoyable market experience.
